Cuba is the proud winner of NORCECA Volleyball Championships – Volleyball News
Cuba has the honour to secure the most number of gold medals at the NORCECA Continental Volleyball Championships since 1969.
The double-gender competition is held biannually and NORCECA, the North America, Central America and Caribbean volleyball federation conducts the operations. Caribbean teams from Cuba (men’s and women’s) have never failed to impress in the competition. In
the last 22 editions of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship, Cuba has earned a total of 22 medals (15 gold, four silver, and 3 bronze). Hence, the Caribbean team always finished in the top-three.
Equally talented Cuban women’s team has the similar record. The female team seized 22 medals (13 gold, seven silver, and 2 bronze).
Cuban men’s national volleyball team recorded a winning streak of six championships from 1987 to 1997. That was the longest winning streak made by Cuban men. In the last two editions of the tournament, Cuba clawed its way to the final showdown and edged
out archrival American team, in order to settle for the top position. Cuba defeated USA in 2009 and 2011 respectively. Elsewhere, Puerto Rico and Canada finished third in the previous two editions.
On the other hand, Cuban women’s national volleyball team has the longest winning streak of eight championships, which took place from 1985-1999. Cuban female squad claimed its last gold medal in 2007. In the last two editions, the team could not get the
real form to claw its way to the top. Cuba finished third in 2009, while Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico settled for the top two positions in the competition. Likewise, the Cuban team failed to go up and finished only third in 2011. Teams from USA and Dominican
Republic contested their skills in the final match, where Americans overpowered the opponents and marched away with final victory.
Next up, the upcoming edition of the NORECA Men’s Continental Volleyball Championship will take place from September in 2013. According to the set plan of NORCECA, Canada will provide the backdrop for men’s matches of the Continental Championship. The 23rd
edition of NORCECA Women’s Continental Volleyball Championship is scheduled to be held from September 8-15 in the USA.
Cuba will enter the men’s competition under the tag of defending champions. However, the women’s team will try to search its lost pride in the competition. The two host nations (USA and Canada) will have the competitive advantage of playing under familiar
conditions. Nonetheless, Cuban teams are expected to put up a nice show of volleyball. Check back to know more about the NORCECA Continental Championships.
