Cuba moves to 2-0 by defeating Colombia on day-2 of the XI Women’s Pan Am Cup – Volleyball News
Caribbean ladies from Cuba continued with their winning ways in the second match of XI Pan American Cup on Friday and added another victory to their count. They defeated team from Colombia in straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-15).
Wilma Salas helped Cuba with 12 points, which included 10 spikes and two aces. Rest of the Cuban players also contributed to the overall success of the team, but remained in the single digits. For Colombia, Melissa Rangel tallied 10 points, in the loss.
The match was played at the Gimnasio UACJ in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and 400 spectators were in attendance. Victory moved Cuba to 2-0 in the tournament, while Colombia shifted to 0-2.
Next up, the cracking action of women’s volleyball will continue on the weekend. Caribbean team will return to action against the American counterparts. Colombia, on the other hand, will be challenged by Canada.

First frame of the match completed its run in 24 minutes. Cuba picked up an early lead and kept the opposite side in chase afterwards. Colombian young players tried different methods, but failed to achieve the desired results. Cuba comfortably secured the
first set and went on front with 1-0 record.
Colombian team staged a good fight with the Caribbean ladies in the following set and scored well. However, the charged-up Caribbean squad cruised past to second-set win with four points.
Cuba did not slow down and dominated the play in third set. Colombia trailed behind with heavy margin and eventually dropped the set with 10-point deficit. Cuba marched away with victory and extended its lead to 2-0 in the XI Women’s Pan American Cup.
Cuban Coach Juan Carlos Gala praised the spectacular feat of his team. He stated: “The goal is a ticket to the FIVB Grand Prix. At the same time after not qualifying to the Olympics we have decided to start over for the next cycle with a new group of young
players and immediately, we are looking forward for our next rival at this Cup: USA.”
Captain of the Caribbean team Yusidey Silie expressed the similar views. She said: “We calmed down and had a more relaxed start in this match, but we have to keep our preparation to achieve our goal.”
Mauro Marasciulo, the head coach of Colombia team explained the reason of failure. According to him, the Cuba had an experienced team-line whereas his team was composed of mostly the young players. However, he expressed for a better performance in the upcoming
matches.
