Cuba retains women’s title at VI NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit – Volleyball news
Cuban female tandem of Niriam Sinal and Ion Canet exhibited a wonderful performance in the final showdown of the VI NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit in Puerto Arista, Chiapas on Sunday and got their hands on the title trophy.
A total of 12 women’s duos were on board to showcase their thirst for victory. However, Cuban pair left everyone behind and clawed its way to the top. In the final encounter of the tournament, Sinal-Canet displayed flawless defence and defeated US duo of
Michelle Moriarty and Traci Weamer. The set scores of the final match were 2-0 (22-20, 25-23). Around 2,000 spectators watched the thrilling action of beach volleyball at the newly built stadium in Puerto Arista.
Equipped with all necessary tools and tricks of the game, the Caribbean pair launched power on the resilient rivals. The American pair fought a great battle with Cubans and used many different tactics in the game but remained unsuccessful.
Sinal-Canet formed a great combination and perfectly complimented each other throughout the match. They secured the opening stanza with two points, 22-20. The US duo created a lot of ‘hue n cry’ in the following set but still suffered the set-back. The hotly
contested affair came to an end as Cuba posted 25-23 on board and earned the winning status.
Sinal, who was still covered in sand due to digging and diving on the court, shared her thoughts after the match. She seemed full of joy and said, “The key was our tactical discipline to which we stuck throughout the match. This gave us the opportunity to
counterattack and we scored enough points to play with greater confidence during the decisive moments.”
Likewise, her teammate Canet expressed delight about their amazing victory. She expressed her emotions in the following manner, “We feel right at home here in Chiapas because spectators are just wonderful to us. I hope to play here next year.”
In the bronze medal match, Mexico’s Virgen and Revuelta came into contest with Canadian Caleigh Whitaker and Victoria Altamore. The home duo had certain advantages in the game. They had the support of local fans and also had the competitive edge of playing
at familiar court. The guest duo from Canada struggled to overcome the hosts but faced utmost resistance.
Mexican pair denied all the efforts of visiting team and finished the game in straight sets of 2-0 (21-18, 21-17). The hosts could not reach the top slot but still managed to finish in the top-three. The home audience went home delighted after the closely
contested matches during the day.
The town of Puerto Arista in Chiapas, Mexico successfully served host to a NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit for the third time.
