The first match of the final round of the FIVB World League took place on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The two teams that were contesting in the opening match of the finals were Brazil and Cuba while the match was being held in Arena Armeec
where a crowd of 6000 spectators had gathered to watch the show. The match did not last long but surprised most as Cuba was able to make a clean sweep over its opponents.
Cuba, who are ranked at number five in the world, took one hour and 29 minutes to hand out a defeat to the Brazilians at the following final set scores: 25-19, 26-24 and 25-22.
The coach of the Cuban squad, Orlando Samuels, expressed his delight at the win in the following words, “Our strongest elements were the attack and the serve and this is what helped us win. We managed to do everything in the best way possible and we have
played good volleyball since the beginning of the tournament.”
On the other hand, the Brazilian coach, Bernardo Rezende, voiced his disappointment at the loss in the following manner, “I am sorry we did not play our best today in front of this public. The team keep on making a lot of mistakes and the Cuban players took
advantage of that. I believe that the less mistakes we make, the better match it could have been.”
The player who was able to secure the title of the best scorer of the match belonged to Cuba as Wilfredo Leon Venero tallied a total of 15 points for his team. On the other hand, the player that kept the challenge up from the Brazilian side by scoring the
most points was Sidnei dos Santos Junior with a score of 13.
Cuba was able to lead into the first technical timeout of the opening set at 8-5. The strong blocking and forceful attack of the Cuban players caused the Brazilians to make errors that helped in stretching the Cuban lead. Brazil managed to pull themselves
together but by that time it was too late and the Cubans comfortably seized the first set at 25-19.
The start of the second set too saw the Cubans take the lead early on and still hold it till 16-12. The Brazilians were able to propel themselves forwards and make the frame reach a tie at 24-24. However, the Cubans were in full form and they did not deviate
