The World number five ranking Cuban men’s volleyball team is still in the running for the London 2012 Olympic Games after making a clean sweep over India on June 10, 2012 in a FIVB Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament match.
The contest between the two sides was staged in Berlin, Germany while the venue of the competition was the Max- Schmeling Hall.
The first set of the match saw India struggle significantly but they were able to pull up their performance in the second and third sets. However, Cuba remained at the top of the game throughout the match which is shown by the following final set scores:
25-12, 25-22 and 25-20.
The coach of the Cuban side, Orlando Samuels, shared his views on the match by giving the following comments, “It was hard to play after the defeat against Germany yesterday. I think there has been only one crucial game during this tournament. I’m not happy
because we probably don´t get to qualify for the Olympic games by winning against India.”
On the other hand, the Indian coach G.E. Sridharan, gave the following statements to express himself, “It was a good and fair game today, I’m satisfied with the victory. Now we have to await the last game between Germany and the Czech Republic.”
The player that scored the most points in the entire match was Cuban Rolando Cepeda with 23. On the other hand, the Indian captain Singh Gurinder kept the pressure on his rivals by tallying a total of 11 points for his side.
The opening set of the match was one sided from the start as the Cubans sped to a lead and went on to secure the frame quickly at 25-12. The Indians were able to step up their play in the second set and the frame got to a tie at 9-9. Despite their commendable
effort, the Indians fell to making errors in the later part of the frame that shifted the advantage back to the Cubans who did not let the chance slip away and propelled themselves to grab the second set at 25-22.
The third set went level for the most part but as the game reached it’s mid, the Cubans were leading at 14-10. After this point, they did not let go of the lead and went on to win the frame at 25-22.
The recent win has enabled the Cubans to make a 2-1 record in the tournament while the Indians have yet not been able to win even a single match.
