Cuba sweeps Nicaragua in a U19 Championship match – Volleyball news
Cuba and Nicaragua competed against each other in a Group A match of the preliminary round of Norceca Boy’s U19 Continental Championship which is being hosted by Tijuana in Mexico. The matches are being held in the Centro de Alto Rendimiento sports hall.
The contest between Cuba and Nicaragua did not take long to end as Cuba was able to make a clean sweep over its opponents in front of 200 spectators that had come to watch the show.
Cuba was able to bag its second win of the tournament in one hour and three minutes with the score board showing the following final set scores: 25-14, 25-11 and 25-8.
The coach of the Cuban side, Rodolfo Sánchez, shared his views about the victory earned by his team in the following words, “I feel we played better, not at our best yet, but less nervous and also expected a different match against Nicaragua after we saw
them playing against Costa Rica.”
On the other hand, the Nicaragua coach Osman Hernández, shared his sentiments at the loss of his team by making the following statements, “The experience of facing Cuba was very helpful for us, because we could see in which level we are. It was different
from the match against Costa Rica, because we know each other, but against Cuba is a whole different thing, because of its players reach and height.”
The player who earned the honour of being the top scorer of the match was Santiago Uriarte of Cuba as he tallied a total of 13 points for his side. Uriarte was helped by his team mate Inover Romero who made his presence felt by contributing 11 points for
his side. On the other hand, the player who led the scoring on the Nicaraguan side was Christopher Lee Lazo as he put up 6 points.
The start of the opening set saw the Cubans take the lead and they were able to stretch their advantage. Nicaragua tried to close in the gap and remained successful for a time but they could not over take their opponents. As a result, Cuba was able bag the
first set of the game at 25-14.
The second set of the match was dominated by the Cubans from the start as they were able to take the advantage from the beginning. The efforts of the Nicaragua side did not prove strong enough to give them a winning chance in the frame which made it an easy
job for Cuba to secure the second set at 25-11.
The loss of the first two sets de-motivated the Nicaraguans and they could not perform up to the mark in the third set which was stormed by Cuba and they raced to the end of it leaving their opponents far behind. Cuba was able to seal the deal at 25-8.
