Cuba wins by 3-1 against Egypt in a 2011 FIVB World Cup match - Volleyball
The Cubans men’s national volleyball team had a match with the Egyptians today, December 4, in Tokyo, Japan. Both teams were competing on the final day of the fourth round of the 2011 FIVB World Cup at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The Cubans beat the
Egyptians at the following final set scores: 26-24, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-20.
The first set of the match was the most competitive one as neither team was willing to let the other take dominance at the courts. No one was sure where the tables would turn until the very which saw the Cubans coming off as the stronger team. The Egyptians
responded by remaining tough in the second set and after an impressive display of volleyball skill finally got hold of the frame and equalised the match.
Both the teams stayed neck to neck with each other in the third frame but the Cubans turned out to be the better of the two in the end. The fourth set saw the performance of the Egyptians slacken a bit as the Cubans took the lead and sealed the deal on the
frame.
The coach of the Cuban squad, Orlando Samuell Blackwood, expressed himself in the following words at the press conference after the match had ended: “First thanks to Egypt for their compliments. The Egyptian team was new for us, [as we don’t know them so
well]. They had excellent blocks and spikes, and it was difficult for us to score."
On the other hand, the coach of the Egyptian side, Sherif El-Shemerly, shared his views by giving the following statements: “First congratulations to coach [Orlando Samuell Blackwood] and the Cuban team for both their victory and for taking fifth place.
I think today, as my captain said, there were 11 matches in this tough competition."
The player that was able to score the most points in the entire match was the Cuban Fernando Hernandez Ramos with a total of 25 points.
