With the second round of the FIVB Volleyball Women´s Junior World Championship started in Lima, Peru, the first match of the Pool G was played between Cuba and Korea on Tuesday, 26th July. The match went on for four thrilling sets at the end of which Cuba managed to pull off a win over the Koreans by 3-1.
The Cubans were able to earn a win at the following final set scores: 25-23, 18-25, 26-24 and 25-17.
The first set took on a competitive atmosphere as both the teams wanted to assert their dominance. The second set was pretty much one sided, with the Koreans staying in the lead most of the time. The Cubans rebounded with a tight third set and sealed the fourth one with rejuvenated confidence.
The Cuban captain, Yunieska Robles, shared her feelings at the press conference after the match in the following words: “Our team is a fighter, with a good dig. This is why we could obtain the victory, although we started the match too confident.”
On the other hand, the Cuban coach, Pupo Robinson, made the following comments: “Cuba obtained its first victory and we are happy about it. However, this is a challenge to be the leader of the Pool and to be in the 9 position."
The start of the first set of the match saw the Cubans in the leading position but the Koreans did not let them keep it for long and tied the match at 7-7. After the first technical time out, the Cubans were leading but the Koreans stayed in the chase and managed to get a tie again at 15-15. The match was still tied at 19-19 but the Cubans pulled off an opening set win at 25-23.
The loss of the first set of the game did not sit well with the Koreans who came out strong in the second set and were in a leading position as the first technical time out was called. After the teams came back, the Cubans managed to cut the gap to 10-9. However, the Koreans put on a spurt of speed that took them all the way to 25-18.
The Cubans and the Koreans both played the third set with intensity but the Koreans had the lead at the second technical time out at 16-14. The Cubans did not give up and had the match tied at 24-24, finally bagging it at 26-24.
The fourth set was mostly dominated by the Cuban squad as it started out with a lead at 8-3 and extended it to 16-8. After this point, the Koreans were left behind as the Cubans increased their pace to seal a win at 25-17.
With their recent win, the Cubans have been able to bag their first victory in the tournament while the Koreans are cradling three defeats, accomplished against a single victory.
