Cuban Nancy Carrillo will hit the centre court again – Volleyball update
Cuban female volleyball star Nancy Carrillo de la Paz, who is going to be 26 years old on January 11, 2012 is finally back on the volleyball court after a long break.
The Caribbean middle-blocker officially retired from Cuban National Team two years ago and completely disappeared from the volleyball scene afterwards. However, she has recently signed a new contract with Brazilian club team, BMG/Sao Bernardo. After two
years of absence, she will make an appearance wearing a volleyball outfit. This is the first time in the history of BMG/Sao Bernardo that a Cuban player has joined the team.
Nancy played for the famous Cuban club teams such as Uralochka Ekaterinburg and Ciudad de la Habana but she was internationally known for her position in the Cuban Women’s National Team. She represented her native country at the 2002 FIVB Women’s World Championship,
where Cuba finished fifth. Carrillo played an instrumental role in Cuba’s overall performance. Back then, she was named the Women’s Best Server in the competition and enjoyed huge limelight.
Likewise, the Cuban team earned qualification for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Once again, Nancy put up a great show of volleyball and led her team to a bronze medal victory. That was probably the biggest highlight of Nancy’s volleyball career
before retirement as she is still remembered as the Olympic bronze medallist.
In 2005, Nancy emerged as the Best Blocker at the FIVB Grand Prix and also settled for Best Server’s award at the NORCECA Championship, in the same year. She grabbed much success in 2007 and became the world’s best female volleyball athlete.
Nancy has an amazing quality to produce powerful jump serves as she supplies plenty of power to the ball. She not only makes good use of her hands but also uses her mind during the game. She is best known for causing damage to opponent’s passing with her
strong serves and aces. Other than that, the Cuban player has a strong attack and powerful blocking ability, which makes her nearly unbeatable on her middle blocker’s position.
Brazilian club team has high hopes that they will do even better with the help of Nancy in 2012.
