  1. The Mariel Boatlift officially began April 15, 1980 and ended October 31, 1980, with the arrival of over 125,000 Cubans to Southern Florida from Port of Mariel, Cuba.

  3. This was an event that occured when over 120,000 Cubans were allowed to leave Cuba to the United States.

This started off when 5 Cubans decided to ram the gates of the Peruvian embassy with a bus to seek asylum. Cuban guards in charge of the embassy shot back at the Cubans but one of the guards was killed in a shoot-off. The Peruvian embassy took these dissidents as refugees. Fidel Castro demanded these Cubans to be returned to Cuban authorities to arrest them, but the embassy refused to. Castro decided to take away the guards in charge of the embassy. Word spread of this and 10,000 Cubans jammed the embassy seeking asylum.

Fidel Castro decided to allow people to leave if they desired to do so. U.S. President Jimmy Carter allowed Cubans to land in the U.S. and seek political asylum. Castro opened the port of Mariel in Cuba to allow people to leave Cuba.

This exodus lasted 6 months. The excess amount of Cubans going to the U.S. overwhelmed the U.S. government, and the fact that Castro started to send criminals and mentally imcompetant people made the U.S. stop accepting people. The governments came into an agreement to stop this on October 31st, 1980.
