  1. In Cuba drinking rum is something like sleeping and eating , its part of the daily life. So rum is sold in almost every shop.

Don't buy your rum in the resort or at airport too expensive buy your bottles in a local grocery shop. Buy only the well known brands such as Havana Club, Varadero, Mulato. Check if the  metal sealing is not broken. and don't buy rum of unknown brands or open bottles. Sometimes the "real thing" is mixed with some inferior home made products.

I think you must be 16 years in Cuba for drinking alcohol and smoking , but in general Cubans will not make a problem of it.

  2. I am not sure what the legal drinking age is in Cuba, but I doubt anyone would question an 18 year old buying rum. (I suspect few Cubans would question a foreigner on that point).

As Richard says - the bigger question is whether the Canadian authorities will allow this.

  3. Sure, they will sell it to you  in Cuba but you are most likely underage to bring it into Canada.  Check the site below.

  4. Depends on where you go and sometimes what time of day. If you try buying some at the peak sales rush, around lunch of mid afternoon, they may be busy enough to skim over the ID issue, OR...if you want to try this...just tell some older looking passer by "Hey man, sorry to bother you. A friend of mine wanted a souvenir, and really likes the rum, but I lost my ID. Could you help me out?" Make sure to tip big doin' something like that, because no one likes doing shifty stuff for free.

  5. You may not have a problem buying it in Cuba, but anyone bringing alcohol into Canada must meet the legal age requirements of the province you are entering, whether visitor or citizen.

Which province are you from? This will depend regarding your age. Only those from Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec can bring alcohol in if they're 18 years of age. The rest of the provinces require you to be 19.

Minimum ages for the importation of alcoholic beverages, as prescribed by provincial or territorial authority:

18 years for Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec; and

19 years for Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Hope that helps...Richard and Beardo also mentioned the legal age as well...buying in Cuba won't be the real issue...it's when you come back.

BTW, if you're able to bring rum back, buy the Havana Club Añejo 7 year old rum. It's a very nice rum, nicely aged and won't be too expensive like the older aged ones....just inbetween.
