Cuban women’s handball team set to play at the World Championship in Brazil – Handball News
Female players from Cuba would try to make their presence felt next month. The energetic women’s handball team from Cuba has announced their plans to take part in the championship. The announcement of their participation came on November 25, 2011.
According to sources, the President of the National Handball Federation of Cuba, Andres Hurtado, confirmed the news about the participation of the Cuban women’s handball team in the World Championship. This year, the World Championship is being held in Brazil.
This also marks a historic moment in the sports world of Cuba. The Cuban women’s handball team has been formed for the first time in history. The female players would be the first team ever from the island nation of Cuba situated in the Caribbean. As per schedule, the World Championships in Brazil will take place from December 2-21, 2011. In the first round of the tournament, the Cuban’s will face teams from Japan and Tunisia. If Cuba performs well and cruises into the second round, they would then be facing Romania, France and Iran.
After 1999, this will mark the first attempt for the Cuban players in the sports of handball to enter in any championship on a global level. With high hopes to finish strong in 1999, the Cuban team could not meet their expectations, as fans were heartbroken to watch their team lose all five of their matches in the tournament. This year, however, the women players are motivated to give their best shot when they would make their way to the South American country.
Hurtado, who made the momentous announcement through Cuban radio stations, was excited for his team to go on foreign soil. According to team management, the Cuban women’s handball team would depart from Cuba to Brazil on November 30, 2011.
The Cuban players are not only excited for the World Championships, but they are enthralled to represent their country on such a big stage. They are looking forward for the event, as they would be meeting the host team in their debut match. The Cuban team would try to make their mark in the tournament and in the world of handball by beating Brazil in their opening match.
