Cubs end first round of interviews, no more likely candidates for managerial position
Jed Hoyer talked to the press on Friday, November 11, about the Chicago Cubs’ current stance concerning the selection of their new manager. With the top management board reshuffled and infused with fresh blood, the organization is looking at bring the World
Series trophies to the Wrigley Field in Chicago. The replacement for Mike Quade is being sought out throughout the Major League Baseball circuit.
Theo Epstein made his move to the Cubs after the season concluded recently. The former General Manager of the Boston Red Sox is now the President of the Cubs’ Baseball Operations. He is joined by Jed Hoyer, who now sits on the General Manager’s seat. Coming
in from the San Diego Padres, the top manager is involved in the manager selection process. So far the chase has borne fruitful contestants.
Cleveland Indians Bench Coach Sandy Alomar Jr. recently had an interview with the club. Mike Maddux is the next man considered for the position. He is currently the Texas Rangers pitching coach. Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin is the other
candidate. And the last man on the list is Dale Sveum, who is the Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting coach.
With the four mentioned individuals being sought highly by the selection board, Hoyer made the prediction that there would likely be no other man coming in for an interview.
"Probably, yes," Hoyer said Friday about whether this was the Cubs' final four. "We may make some phone calls. I wouldn't guarantee that it is, but we feel really good about the four guys we brought in. We had four very good interviews. I wouldn't rule out
an additional candidate, but it's not a certainty."
For now Epstein and Hoyer will be considering the upcoming General Managers’ meeting.
"We want to make the right decision, not the quick decision," Hoyer said. "We'll be in Milwaukee next week [at the general manager meetings]. We'll have a lot of meetings, a lot of conversations with other GMs and agents, but Theo and I will spend a lot
of time on this process as well."
With the Cubs nearing the selection stage, it is important to note that former Boston manager Terry Francona may turn up as a viable candidate in the near future.
