Cubs reportedly pursuing Edwin Jackson – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ search for pitchers, it seems is far from over.
On Tuesday, December 18, multiple portals reported that the Cubs are pursuing former Chicago White Sox’ right-handed Edwin Jackson. The reports surfaced a few days after the Cubs’ bid for securing Anibal Sanchez for five-year deal failed.
Although the results did not favour the Cubs when it came to their lookout for Sanchez, Sirius XM and ESPN have now reported that the club is among the two finalists seeking Jackson. The other team is the Texas Rangers.
Two sources also hinted that it was the San Diego Padres who had their names in the list. However, by Tuesday night, they had dropped out following the reported demand of the pitcher and his agent Scott Boras for four year deal.
Jackson has represented seven teams over the years. This past year, when he turned 29, the pitcher was pitching for the Washington Nationals. Add to it the fact that in last five years, he played for six teams.
In no season, however, the pitcher has won more than 14 games. With 4.03 this past season, he showed noticeable improvement as far as number of hits and walks were concerned.
That which blew away his chances to stay with the Washington Nationals, however, was the five runs that he surrendered in the six innings in the postseason game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Nationals were eventually eliminated by the Cards.
“I try not to think about it, and if it's hurting, try not to show it. If it was that big a deal and I couldn't pitch with it, I wouldn't pitch. A lot of times in baseball, you're not 100 percent. It depends on how mentally strong you are. That's what it all comes down to,” said the pitcher.
After the failure to sign Anibal Sanchez, the Chicago Cubs have an undeniably rare opportunity at hand to sign this experienced pitcher. Edwin Jackson could be a valuable addition to the Cubs given the exposure he has got, pitching for and against the multiple teams in his MLB career.
