Cucumber Melon Cross?

If melons and cucumbers cross pollinate will they produce off type fruits in that generation?

  1. Cucumber is cucumis sativus and melon is cucumis melo. Some of the species of cucumber genus intercross , but not always sucessful.

  3. The crossing of certain plants in this group when it is possible will only effect the seeds for the next generation, not the fruit of this one. Pumpkins will cross with yellow gourds, summer squash and Cushaw (no other squash than that one though). The cucumbers do not cross. Watermelon will cross with Citron, but other melon types will not cross with the above. This info was paraphrased from Wyman's Gardening Encyclopedia (was curator of the Arnold Arboretum).
