Question:

Culinary arts schools (LBCC or LATTC)?

I really would like to pursue a Culinary Arts Program and I've come down to two schools that interest me. Long Beach City College and Los Angeles Trade Tech. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on which school I should attend? Does that make a difference?

  1. The BEST culinary education comes from working in the industry.  Don't let anyone snow you!  You'll be spending big bucks to get that fancy degree and the best you can hope for is a line cook job that won't begin to pay off your loans.

Best bet, get a job in the first kitchen that will hire you and learn the ropes.  Sure you'll start in the dish room but that's where all the greats start out.   After you've spent a few years in the trenches and you really LOVE the stress, odd hours, and general stink that comes with the territory them you can go to school.

The main thing to ask about any culinary school is how much  real kitchen experience do they require. If the answer is NONE...don't go!  This school is a scam out for your money.

It's also a good idea to be old enough to drink.  Because you will.

  2. LATTC is the better culinary school.  LBCC has a better academic program, but if they even offer culinary arts, they are not known for it.
