Cullen Jones defeats Josh Schneider in 50m freestyle swim-off – North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim
Cullen Jones of SwimMAC Carolina overwhelmed his team member Josh Schneider on the first day of the 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim.
The Charlotte UltraSwim is the sixth stop of the 2010-11 USA Grand Prix Series and is of considerable importance as it precedes the upcoming 2011 World Championships in Shanghai during July.
The 27-year-old Jones defeated Schneider with a slight difference of 0.04 seconds to confirm his spot in the USA Swimming Team squad for the World Championships in Shanghai.
Jones produced a time of 22.24 seconds to fall under the FINA A-Time Qualification Standard of 22.35 seconds for Shanghai. His team member, 23-year-old Schneider touched the wall for silver medal, clocking a time of 22.28 seconds.
Jones said, “We love training with each other. But I'd never wish this upon anyone.”
Jones was extremely happy with his success, saying that this is one of the biggest days of his life.
SwimMAC’s Schneider was dissatisfied with his performance in the 50m event and said, “I'm disappointed. We knew what it would take to win this. Neither of us got the time that we wanted, but it was a good race. It's time to get back to work.”
Schneider ended in a tie with Jones at the 2010 US Swimming Championships in August but was disqualified by an official, who claimed that he broke the start. Schneider defended himself by challenging the official’s decision and appealing for his earned title.
In addition, he suffered from a hand injury that halted his participation at the National Swimming Events.
Recently, Chloe Sutton and Peter Vanderkaay won the titles in the 1500m freestyle and the 800m freestyle. Sutton won the gold medal for the Women’s 1500m freestyle with a timing of 16:16.11 minutes. On the other hand, Vanderkaay conquered the Men’s 800m
freestyle by touching the wall first in 8:11.10 minutes.
Furthermore, Jones has expressed his desire to defend his title in Shanghai, saying that he will provide more to his fans and will try to reach the top of podium in China.
