  1. "Complex societies are not by nature superior": The word "superior" is a subjective values concept which invalidates this answer.

"Societies naturally progress from simple to complex": Best answer:  Social evolution advances through the same stages of development as do humans. Erikson, Maslow: http://www.futurehi.net/images/maslow.jp...  That sequence of evolution requires increasing complexities of organization and associations.

Societies outgrow a primitive beginning: I am uncomfortable with the word "outgrow".  It is sociologically meaningless.

"Complex societies are superior to simple societies.": (see the first answer).

Civilization is progress: Invalidated without defintion of "progress".

  2. Cultural relativism is a theory that no society is superior to another.  All societies have had a very long time to develop and perfect their lifestyles to their way of life.  Thus a cultural relativist would not classify a hunter-gather society as primitive or inferior or not yet as developed as a post-industrial society.  The cultural relativist would say that the hunter-gatherer society is not inferior.
