I am going to spain and I was wondering if anyone who has gone there could tell me if it is true that flirting and whistling at girls/boys is common?

  1. Not true.

Modern Spain is similar to France in these respects.

  2. Not really, only some people do it but rarely, it hardly ever happens.  I lived in Spain for 10 years and it never happened to me, and believe me the people in Spain are extremely nice and polite.  They are one of the most kind people in the World.  But don't worry nothing will happen to you, the people in Spain are amazing.

  3. Just bored old men and some times builders. But the same thing happened to me in both France and England, so I guess is a matter of sexist old pigs. Also, when people say nice things, not sexual, is not rude. The nasty thing is when it's actually in a perverted way, which is not frequent at all

  4. Meh, only a major sexist moron would do that there. Don't worry, it'll be alright.

  5. At least with Madrilians, the general rule is that it is a more conservative society. People usually do not like to attract attention to themselves. This means that the flirting could be very subtle. When you first catch a guy looking at you, he might turn his face away. This does not mean he is not interested. If you keep catching him looking at you then he is flirting with you. Just smile and he will approach you. If you like a guy, do the same.

The south of Spain (Andalucia) is more outgoing so don't be surprised if a guy shows up out of the blue to talk to you!
