Culture is defined as “the way of life of a group of people including that group’s language, music, foods, holidays, and beliefs”. How would you say the cultural geography of the Chumash is similar and/or different from residents of the region today?

  1. Considering that the Chumash were hunter-gatherers who fished for most of their food and were located in what is now the Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties of California, I would say that the language, music, foods, holidays, and beliefs are very different.

Although there were several Chumashan languages and dialects spoken in the past, there are currently no living native speakers of these.  With the loss of the language went most of the culture.  English, Spanish and several Asian languages are spoken by the people of the region today.

The few remaining Chumash live in a very Westernized world, complete with Casino.
