Culver City High boys volleyball team defeats Brentwood on Thursday
The Culver City High boys volleyball team did not enter Thursday’s match as the best ones on the court.
However, by the time they made their exit after defeating the third ranked Brentwood team, the Centaurs were being eyed with renewed respect.
The match in which the two teams competed against each other was part of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs. The Centaurs were playing with the added advantage of being in their home court which played an integral role in keeping their motivation
level high.
By the time that the Centaurs were cheering with their home crowd after securing themselves a win and the Eagles were walking out of the court cradling their disappointment, the scoreboard read 25-19, 27-25, 21-25 and 26-24.
The first set of the match saw both the teams come out strong. The Centaurs and the Sharks were almost neck-to-neck with each other all through the game. No one was sure where the tables would turn and it seemed as if a tug of war was going on between the
two teams. It was only when the initial set reached the final stages that the Centaurs were able to break the barrier and seal the deal at 25-19.
After losing the first set of the match, the Eagles stepped up their game in the second one. They were able to give the Centaurs more of a challenge and did not relent at any point. The Eagles were able to get an overpowering lead at 16-9. However, the Centaurs
did not let the deficit overwhelm them and closed in the gap. Not only did they manage to tie the set but the Centaurs also bagged it at a thrilling 27-25.
A loss of the first two sets of the game increased the pressure on the Eagles to make a win if they were to have any chance at winning the match. Therefore, they started the third set with renewed determination and zeal. The increased momentum that the Eagles
were able to build led them towards a well-deserved third set win at 25-21.
The fourth set of the match started-off with both the teams giving each other tough competition. After a gruelling fight for every point, the Centaurs were the ones that were able to secure a win at 26-24.
“If you would've told me at the beginning of the day that we would be up 2-1 with a game-point on the line 24-23 with the possibility to win, I wouldn't have believed it,” Coach Joe Manzo of Culver City said. “These kids came and wanted to play and did what
they needed to do to win.”
