Former Chelsea and Tottenham player, Jason Cundy believes that the Blues have got the toughest run-in to the season, and are likely to fall short of their aim, of finishing ahead of the Gunners and the Spurs.
However the 42 year old, who made 41 appearances for Chelsea from 1988 to 1992 and represented Tottenham in 28 matches, expected a tight finish in the race for a Champions League place, next season.
Despite the fact that the Blues have got a couple of stern tests ahead of them, he refused to write them off the race, and believed that they needed to capitalize on any possible slip ups from Arsenal and Spurs.
Chelsea will square off against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in two weeks time and will later visit Anfield on the 5th of May.
Cundy said, “Chelsea have still got to go to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 and to Anfield which on paper are very tough fixtures. So you would expect Arsenal and Spurs to take third and fourth but Chelsea have got to make sure they take advantage of any slip-ups this weekend.”
However, the Englishman thought that the coming weekend can be crucial for the Stamford Bridge side in gaining ground over their London rivals, as they have got the easiest match.
Chelsea will host Wigan Athletic on Saturday, while Arsenal and Tottenham will meet Manchester City and Sunderland in their respective matches.
“..if you are looking at Wigan at home you would expect Chelsea to win while both Arsenal and Spurs could potentially both drop points,” Cundy added.
The former defender believed that the match against the Black Cats at the Stadium of Lights is the toughest one that the Spurs have got, in their run-in to the season.
Sunderland are currently placed ninth in the Premier League table and trail Liverpool by only a single point. Last week, Martin O’Neil’s side ended Manchester City’s 15 match winning streak at home, by holding them on to a 3-3 draw.
“This will be a very difficult game for Spurs – far tougher than it would have been under Steve Bruce because this is a very different Sunderland side.”
Cundy thinks that Chelsea needs to up the ante and build more pressure on the Gunners and Spurs, by staying on their heels. He mentioned that Harry Redknapp’s side can dock points against Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 at Loftus Road, who have beaten both Arsenal and

http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 are currently placed fifth in the league table and are five points behind both, Arsenal and Tottenham. Even if the Blues finish the season on a fifth place, they can still make it into the Champions League next season, by winning this year’s competition.
