Question:

Cupcake Frostings - buttercream or fondant?

Im a cupcake fanatic from south africa. Usually what I do is bake flavoured cupcakes [banana or double chocolate etc] and buy a Pillsbury frosting tin and ice the cakes with that. I havent been able to find this frosting anywhere in a month and one of our stores just told me that Pillsbury frosting isnt going to be imported into south africa anymore :(

so now im stuck with cupcakes that need to be frosted for a school event. I decorate them with edible glitter and edible beads and elaborate decorations - all which stick perfectly to the Pillsbury frosting. So Im going to have to just make frosting ... the question is ...

Which frosting is better when it comes to decorations - buttercream or fondant - I make buttercream regularly and the pillsbury frosting resembles a gloassy buttercram, but Ive never worked with fondant but Im curious about it

Anyone with frosting experience please help!

Thanks!

  1. Butter cream is good for icing. But if you want to make something artsy go for the fondant.

  2. i like funfetti

  3. Definetly go with the buttercream if you have never worked with fondant it could be tricky.....and it normally isnt something you use on cupcakes.  Also from the sounds of it you want something more like frosting.  Fondant is a sheet that you have to role out and nothing is going to stick to it and it will just look kind of funky...so buttercream.

  4. Definately buttercream and it tastes so much nicer to

  5. I think you should go for fondant, it has a glossy look and can be alot more attractive if made properly.

  6. Fondant is typically used to cover a cake flat, such as a wedding or anniversary cake.  You roll it out like a pie crust filling and place it over the cake.  I'm not sure it would work on cupcakes.  Plus, not many people truly like the taste of fondant.  I would recommend the buttercream icing.  In my bakery, that's all we make unless someone specifically requests a whipped cream frosting, or a cream cheese frosting.
