  1. You most likely DO have a ghost!

(I have had one in an apartment in Denver about 35 years ago that turned two kitchen chairs over and turned glasses and cups upside down on the shelf, but never actually broke anything.)

There is ONE other thing I can think of that MAYBE could have done it.  Back before plastic lenses in eyeglasses became common, I was sittin in front of a window on a cold day.  I could feel a cold draft coming through the window behind me.  The heater vent was located in the  ceiling just above where I was sitting and I could feel a small stream of heat coming down on me out of that.

Suddenly, my left lens cracked from side to side with a very loud "CRACK"! Talk about being startled!!!

Fortunately, no pieces of the broken lens came out of the frame, so I was not hurt.

My late husband and I figured out that it must have been the combination of the cold draft from around the loosely fit window and the stream of hot air from the overhead heater both hitting the glass lens at just the right angle.

YOUR incident DOES sound more like a ghost, though.  I notice in your initial question, you use the plural "cupS".  If this has happened more than once, I would say it is DEFINITELY a ghost.

  2. Ghosts? *sigh*

It can happen if the glass has imperfections in it, or lots of tiny stress fractures.

  3. One of those ghost things. Have you seen the movie where that little girl is all "They're here" in the sing song voice. That's sooooo scary!!
