Currency Swap lands Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga
Currency Swap, trained by Teresa M. Pompay, remained invincible at Saratoga, as he secured a comprehensive victory in the Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes on Sunday, July 29th. It was his third appearance at Saratoga, and he maintained his unbeaten run
in a great fashion.
Currency Swap showed plenty of speed in the beginning to bring himself in the front row. He kept running well in the middle stages to stay prominent all the way through.
He was well in command, but it did not look an easy journey for the 3-year-old. Doctor Chit put him under a lot of pressure, and things started to slip out of his hands. Nevertheless, the bay colt did not lose his determination, and regained his advantage
in the final moments.
After establishing his dominance for the second time, he made no mistake whatsoever, and eventually clinched a 1 ¾-length triumph over Doctor Chit in the $200,000 meeting.
It was Currency Swap’s second win this season, as he earlier won the You and I Stakes at Belmont Park. His track record at Saratoga is quite impressive. He started off his career with a huge bang, winning the Maiden Special Weight in June last year.
After a thrilling debut, he continued his good form to seal a convincing win in the Grade 1 Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes in September 2011. Owned by Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence, the colt displayed an equally good show on Sunday, stopping the
clock in 1:15.33.
“He loves it here and he’s been doing really well. Of course, you don’t know until you put him up against the competition, but as far as training wise, he’s been doing better and better and better,” Pompay said.
The handler continued: “I looked at him, and he looked like he was just doing it easy. I liked where he was. That’s how I like him to run. I was very happy with it. I’d rather have him sitting, stalking than on the lead.”
Currency Swap has made seven starts so far, emerging as winner on four occasions. He holds entries for the Grade 1 King's Bishop, and the Vosburgh.
