Currency Swap to run into Trinniberg again in the Amsterdam Stakes
The 3-year-old William H. Lawrence and Klaravich Stables Inc. owned colt, Currency Swap, in his last start lost to Trinniberg, but the Teresa Pompay trained colt was valiant in defeat, as he made a contest out of the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont
Park on 9 June, 2012, over a distance of seven furlongs.
There is no doubt, Trinniberg ran an emphatic race, and was nowhere to be caught, but Currency Swap tagged with Rajiv Maragh forced the winner to go that fast, as the searched for the opening throughout the race, but couldn’t manage to pass Trinniberg, as
they lost it by a mere margin of 1 ¾ lengths.
Despite losing the race, conditioner Teresa Pompay was happy with Currency Swap’s performance, who earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 102 – his career best.
“Nobody went, so Rajiv had to go and do the dirty work,” Pompay said. “Trinniberg is a really nice horse. Maybe in a different scenario if someone else went with him we could have relaxed. My horse really doesn’t want to run that way. But I was real proud
of him.”
The winner of the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes as a juvenile, Currency Swap was coming into the Woody Stephens off a victory in the You and I Stakes at about seven furlongs at Belmont Park, where he defeated Brian in second and Hardened Wildcat in third with the
winning time of 1 minute and 22.43 seconds on 12 May, 2012.
The main goal over the rest of the campaign for Currency Swap is to run in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes, also over a distance of seven furlongs at Saratoga Race Course on 25 August, 2012, and the interim race would be the Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes at
Saratoga on 29 July.
The Amsterdam Stakes will be run over a distance of six and a half furlongs, and Trinniberg is expected to feature in that race as well.
“Obviously we’re going to run into Trinniberg again,” Pompay said. “I don’t know if would be in both spots. We’ll definitely catch him in one, and that’s fine.”
