Currency exchange in Paris?

i am going to Paris in few days, now the Euro is 1.6: 1.00, my god!! Bank told me it's best to exchange when you are in Paris instead here at US, what should I do? Which is the best way?

Take US dollar travelers checks and cash them in Paris a bit at a time  ...safety first!!!
