Question:

Currency to take to Mexico.?

Wondered if it was still the right thing to do by taking US dollars or taking Pesos. With the credit crunching, exchange rates have plummeted, I'm not going until September so should I wait until nearer the time or are things going to get even worse? My friend is taking US dollars but I've heard your change comes in Pesos so you'd end up with both currencies anyway.

  1. use us currency

  2. they accept both money.

  3. as of yesterday the dollar was 10.19 peso. the value of the dollar is dropping and as it drops the amount of peso is less.7 month ago it was 10.87 peso for a usd and now it's dropping still.  you should watch the exchange. the dollar might bounce back and you might get more pesos or it might drop lower and you will get even less pesos.   i live in rio verde mx and travel back and forth to work. VIA MEXICO

  4. umm you should just stay home

  5. In the biggest vacation places (Acapulco, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta) they'll accept USD. But most of the time at 1:10, which is not a great rate.

However, if you're going somewhere else, do take pesos with you (or change dollars at the bank when you arrive there).

Getting pesos from ATMs can be a good solution too; but watch out for "out of the country fees", which can be heavy.

To pay, do use your American Express card instead of your VISA or Mastercard, that way you are not charged for foreign transactions.

    Buen viaje! :)

  6. They dont mind either currency but using us dollars would be easier, the market prefer them, Also dont forget to take plenty of 1 dollar bills for tips, you end up running out cos tipping is expected most times,

  7. It is so much better to go ahead and change your currency here at a bank, or in Mexico in the bank. All vendors accept a peso being 10 pesos to 1 dollar when in reality it is usually worth more, like 10.78 is the average I believe. So on ever dollar you are losing .78 pesos if you do not exchange it. The best thing to do if you have a credit card or debit card is to get money out of the ATM machine in Mexico because you will get that days actual exchange. Since you are not going to Mexico until september it would be wise of you to watch the dollar everyday until then  Keep a little money tucked away and when the dollar hits a high mark exchange it then. I was so mad because last year right before I went to Mexico the United States had a spurt day where the pesos reached 15:1. That was amazing and I did not have any money to exchange. Also if the pesos goes anything above $11 I would exchange it then too. GOOD LUCK and I hope you have a wonderful trip.

  8. We just got back from the Riviera Maya May 24.  We used US dollars.  Change was given back in pesos, but we used that on the next purchase.  We had no problems.
