I didn't think I could add my bf to the lease so he has been living there off the lease. So we looked at a new place it's nicer pool, tennis, game room etc. Now I found out he can be on the lease at my current place. Should I save money or go for the nicer place and start fresh?

  1. If you like where you're living and the landlord is agreeable to having your boyfriend added to the lease, then why move?  If, on the other hand, you'd like a change of scenery and you both qualify for the unit, then move.

A couple of things to think of:

    - Would the new place drastically change your commute to/from work or school?

    - Are the amenities at the new unit better than the ones where you are now?  Would you even use them?  If the new unit is a higher rent, are the new amenities worth the cost?

    - Are utilities included in the rent at the new unit?

    - Could you afford either unit on your own?  It's dreadful to think about, but if something happened to your boyfriend and you were left to foot the rent, utilities and other expenses yourself, could you cover it by yourself?

  2. Don't forget to factor in moving costs and the hassle of moving itself (physically moving everything, changing your address everywhere, the cost of re-establishing utilities, etc.). Also, are there any other advantages/disadvantages of moving to the new place (closer/farther from work, school, friends, relatives, shopping, etc.)?

Have you seen the units at the new place, specifically which unit you would get? If not, it might be in a location that isn't very good (near the dumpsters which make a lot of noise on trash day, near a playground, far from parking or laundry, you might have noisy or otherwise undesireable neighbors, etc.).

Will you really use the pool, tennis courts, or game room that much to justify paying more?

There's a lot to consider. And, personally, I hate moving. So, my inclination would be, if you're happy where you are, why go through the hassle and expense of moving?

  3. Is it bigger for more money? more utilities covered? or is it just nicer? If you really want the new place and you can afford then go for it!

These days though you have to be careful, don't stretch yourself too far otherwise you might be getting an eviction notice on your door someday!
