I am struggling to find an issue in special education that I will be able to write a 15 page paper on. I would like to stay away from inclusion and NCLB if possible. Basically there needs to be a lot of info available from reliable sources.

Thank you!

  1. I work with autistic kids and I know there are a lot of issues in the school concerning ABA/IBI in classrooms....Autism seems to be very relevant these days and I am sure you can find lots of information.

  2. why don't you write about the new insurgence of children with autism ausbergers and fall under the autistic spectrum, my son is to smart to receive an IEP, he has generalized anxiety disorder and is a highly functional autistic child with ahigh IQ,... but has a heck of a time functioning at school emotionally, as do most children in this area... the school says, unless you are flailing in education no problem exists... therefore he has no problem, so many parents i know have had problems when their child has emotional, not behavioral problems... we really need to be represented.....EVERYDAY is a challange and brings sadness. there needs to be changes  at school.

  3. You could profile a certain type of therapy, i.e. speech or occupational.

  4. May I recommend the controversy regarding the use of seclusion and restraint?  I did a 45min. presentation on it for a grad class.  there is tons of info available.  Michigan has just rewritten its policy.  Personally, I see the need to be able to use it as a last resort.  I am a teacher that works with young adults 17-26 with cognitive and emotional impairments, and have had students 250#+ that are into throwing tables, chairs, etc.  I find it to be a fascinating topic.   Good luck.

  5. The laws that govern special ed, IDEA.

This is the foundation for special ed  and it is crumbling becuase of the schools.

This is the FEDERAL law that governs special ed and schools all over the country are fighting parents to NOT help teh children.

You can search for this all over teh internet. This is kept under wraps because school officials don't want parents to know about it.

Schools spend thousands of dollars to hire lawyers to take parents to court to get out of helping their kids and they could have just used this money to help the child.

AND, when parents are in court for this, they have a 'gag order' not to tell what the school did wrong.

Talk about covering up!!  THey HAVE to be doing something pretty bad if the COURT makes the parents not talk about it!!

Education is teh ONLY organization that does NOT get in trouble for violating FEDERAL laws, and this is the organization that  is in business for OUR CHILDREN!!

Others who violate federal laws have to go to prison, but NOT educational people! THey have NOTHING done to them when they hurt our children!!

These aer the people that WE as TAXPAYERS are paying these peoples PAYCHECK and they do this to OUR CHILDREN!!

You would not believe the horrible stories. Go to www.wrightslaw.com and www.reedmartin.com to read about some.

  6. You could do how to attract people into the profession.

How to keep people in the profession.

    Technology in special education

Lawsuits, advocates, balancing the needs of them versus unnecessary paperwork

Early intervention should be a huge one!

The growing number of kids that are profoundly disabled who wouldn't have been saved twenty years ago in a NICU.  They lots and lots of needs that require lots and lots of money.  Is it  fair for the school to still take them, etc?

Identifying girls is always said to be harder. How do balance it?

How highly publicized cases effect how special education programs operate and how they influence public perception of the schools?

  7. what about autism?  autismspeaks.org

  8. What about the funding or lack of funding spent in special education and you could then expand on what is needed, equipment and types of equipment and how they can benefit the student/s.

The lack of teachers and teachers aides to support the disabled student. And the issues they (the teachers/teachers aide)  face when trying to support the student, this could be adaptive equipment is not being available, how to better identify, respond and support students with learning disabilities, with class room strategies and adaptive technology.

Issues and challenges that a student faces from a day to day basis within the school, e.g access to the class room, mobility problems and so forth.

I not sure if this of any help. But good luck with the paper.

  9. I know this involves inclusion, but bear with me:

What is the psychological effect on high-functioning students who are in both mainstream and segregated (Special Ed) classes?

By "high functioning", I mean otherwise normal students who happen to have something like ADD or dyslexia. In other words, people who could be aware that they've been socially set apart for a negative reason.

Also, do students with an IEP perform better in schools that are exclusively special ed, a mix of mainstream and segregated classrooms, or schools that don't have segregated classrooms at all but discreet councilors and study sessions?

  10. Response to Intervention , RTI

  11. Autism in the special education classroom.

  12. Why would you want to stay away from inclusion and NCLB?  That IS what is going on now.  If you are hoping to write a reasonably realistic paper, then that is what you will have to write about.  (Not that I am thrilled about that, either, but it is the way the system works).

BTW, Autistic kids are included in the regular classrooms now, not in a special self contained room.

  13. Global warming.

  14. Write about strategies, therapies, or interventions for children with autism, ADHD, Emotional Disabilities, or behavior issues.  You will find plenty of material.  You will also be able to directly apply everything you learn to the classroom.

  15. 15 pages is a walk in the park!

There is lots of research being done on Autism education right now. Deaf education was always a big interest of mine.

Check out CEC for tons of topics and a lot of valuable research.

  16. How about discipline and/ or behavior plans and legal issues related to disciplining special education students.

    Check out

www.wrightslaw.com for more information resources and topics.

  17. a 15 page paper?  Yuk!  Double spaced I hope at least...

well, how about all the things you can do wrong at an IEP?  Not have an LEA, not have reg. ed there, all the wrong things to say to a parent....the list is endless! :)  and there are lots of resources on the web.  IDEA06 also gives very specific guidelines on the IEP process so you can use that as an guideline and go from there.

    Good luck! :)
