Basically, I want to buy an hd dvr receiver from a friend and not go through DirectV because they are charging too much to sell their HD DVR Receiver with fees, installations, etc.... Also In addition, all I would have to do is pay for the dvr service?

  1. yes its possible. now the next steps:

    1. is your friend currently using the hd dvr? meaning does he have an active account with directv and the hd dvr is part of his account? if it is, he needs to contact dtv first and deactivate that receiver.

    2. you have to call dtv and order a new access card for the receiver. its also for your own protection. because if there are unbilled pay per views on the original access card, they will get charged to you.

    3. if the hd dvr will be a replacement, you need to call dtv and deactivate your hd receiver. because if you won't, your hd receiver will be counted as an additional receiver in your account ($4.99). anyways, once your hd is deactivated, the new charge on your bill will only be the dvr charge of $5.99/month

  2. If the box you want doesn't decode Direct's signal then your SOL, sorry :((

    Try cable?
