Currie Cup: Round -six preview
The sixth round of the Currie Cup will take place over the weekend and promises to be another week of exciting rugby from the South African premiership division.
Griquas vs. Pumas
The Griquas welcome the Pumas to Kimberly for the first game of round-six.
The Griquas were manhandled by Western Province in a 50-3 loss. This week they will be interested in getting back on track against a struggling Pumas side.
The Pumas are at risk of relegation if they are not able to string together some points over the next two weeks. They will need a strong outing against the Griquas away from home.
The Griquas currently sit in fourth place with 15 points, while the Pumas are in second last with five points.
Leopards vs. Natal Sharks
The Leopards welcome the Natal Shark to Potchefstroom for the second game of the week.
The Leopards performed well in a losing effort at the hands of the Blue Bulls last week, and will hope to continue their strong play against a difficult Sharks sides.
The Sharks demonstrated their skill last week, bouncing back to defeat the Golden Lions in a very one-sided affair.
The Leopards are in last place with four points, while the Sharks sit in second with 20 points.
Golden Lions vs. Cheetahs
The Golden Lions will host the Free State Cheetahs at home in Johannesburg in the weekends third match-up.
The Golden Lions were defeated by the Sharks last week, and will need a more solid game plan if they hope to challenge the Cheetahs in round-six.
The Cheetahs fought off a tough Pumas side last week, and will aim to continue their winning ways against the Lions.
The Golden Lions currently sit in sixth place with six points, while the Cheetahs are in fifth with 14 points.
Western Province vs. Blue Bulls
In the featured game of the week, Western Province will welcome the Blue Bulls to Cape Town for a prime time match-up.
Western Province has cruised through the table so far this season, and is more-or-less guaranteed a second round position. Next week’s match against the Blue Bulls will be the biggest test of the season for the current table-toppers.
The Blue Bulls have had an up-and-down 2010 campaign, and aim to prove that they are back on track in this weeks game against Western Province.
Both sides are coming off of victories. Western Province embarrassed the Griquas with a 50 point effort last week. The Blue Bulls meanwhile snuck out another close one, this time against the Leopards. The Bulls allowed the Leopards to get back in the competition late, and the clock ran out with Blue Bulls up by only five points.
With South African Springboks reporting for a mid-week camp it is unclear if the players will make it back in time for the Sunday match-up between the two rivals. Nevertheless the game promises to be an exciting one between, historically, the two best teams in the South African club rugby.
Western Province sits in first place with 23 points, while the Blue Bulls hold onto a second round spot in third with 16 points.
