Currie Cup round-five recap
The fifth round of the 2010 Currie Cup took place over the weekend, and it was once again an exciting week. The Blue Bulls seemed to have gotten their game back on track, but not without a scare from the Leopards, while Western Province continued to run over their competition.
Blue Bulls 43 Leopards 38
The Leopards started off the scoring in what was an end-to-end affair at Loftus Versfeld stadium. Ligtoring Landman crossed the line, while Niell Jacobs notched the conversion, and then shortly after a penalty to give the away team a 10-0 lead early.
The Bulls stormed back however, as Gerhard van den Heever crossed the threshold for their first try of the day. Derrick Kuun, and Dewald Potgieter quickly crossed the line for another two tries.
Just as the half was ending van den Heever crossed the line again for the Bulls fourth unanswered try of the half.
The Bulls notched another try early in the second half. The two sides then exchanged tries with Michael Bondisio scoring for the Leopards. Bondisio wasted no time getting back on the board, swiftly tallying his second try of the day.
The Leopards crossed the whitewash twice more, with the final try coming from Dumisane Matyeshana, however it was too little too late, as the Bulls narrowly escaped the comeback attempt.
Western Province 50 Griquas 3
A Naas Olivier penalty in the 17th minute was all the Griquas could muster in what was a very one sided affair.
The first half was all penalties for Province, as Willem de Waal hit four to start the game for the visiting side.
In the second half Province embarrassed the home side, spreading the ball around and having six different players score tries. Juan de Jongh scored the first try of the game in the 47th minute, while Lionel Cronje came off the bench to notch the games final try in the 79th minute.
The game was never in doubt, as Western Province demonstrated why they are the class of the 2010 campaign.
Cheetahs 45 Pumas 30
The game started out with a series of penalties, and the Pumas held a 6-3 lead heading in to the 17th minute. However, Cheetahs prop Coenie Oosthuizen managed to push his way across the line for the games first try, and put the away team in front 10-6.
The Pumas were tough early on, as only eight minutes later Shaun Venter crossed the whitewash to give the underdogs back the lead at 13-10.
The Cheetahs did not let up however, as they managed two quick tries from Hendro Scholtz and Jongi Nokwe to take a 24-16 lead into half.
After the break the Cheetahs came storming out, scoring three unanswered tries, the last one coming from Meyer Bosman in the 59th minute to give the visiting side a 45-16 lead.
The Pumas managed to cross the line twice before the half ended, with tries from Jacques Coetzee, and Carl Bezuidenhout. However, it was far too late for the home team.
Natal Sharks 48 Golden Lions 19
The Natal Sharks opened the scoring with a Patrick Lambie penalty in the fourth minute, and did not let up for the remainder of the match.
The game went into the second half close, with the Sharks only holding an 18-16 lead after the two sides traded scores over the first 40 minutes.
The second half was a different story, as the home side was able to cross the line three times and kick three penalties. Lambie ended the day as he started it with a penalty in the 69th minute to make the score 41-19 and put a cap on another brilliant Sharks performance.
