Curtis Cup golf event boosts local Scottish tourism industry – Golf News
The 37th edition of one of the leading golf competitions, Curtis Cup, was held at The Nairn Golf Club, in Scotland, United Kingdom, from June 8 to 10, 2012.
The event, which brought together some of the prominent golfers on the course, gave a huge boost to the local tourism industry and the economy on the whole.
As many as 16 players were confirmed for the tournament. They represented two teams, one from Great Britain & Ireland combined and the other from the United States. Each side had eight players respectively.
The US team was defending the title at The Nairn, in a three-day match. Meanwhile, Great Britain and Ireland had not been able to win the event since their victory in 1996 at Killarney, Ireland.
However, Great Britain and Ireland finally overcame the US team after sixteen years, thrashing the rivals with a score of 10.5 and 9.5.
Earlier, Tegwen Matthews, captain of Great Britain & Ireland team, led her team to a victory in last year’s Astor Trophy against New Zealand, Canada, Australia and South Africa at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire.
This gave Great Britain & Ireland team a boost in the Curtis Cup to topple the US team and end its reign of victories.
The venue course also gave them an advantage, as it had brought a number of victories for the Great Britain & Ireland teams in the past.
They beat the Continent of Europe and the United States in 1991 Vagliano Trophy match and 1999 Walker Cup, respectively.
“The area obviously delights in such international competition and provided crowds that showed such a passion and support that it amounted to a 2 point start,” Peter McEvoy, captain of the 1996 Great Britain & Ireland team, had said.
Lucy Tormey worked as the event artist at The Nairn. She was commissioned by the Ladies' Golf Union to produce the master art pieces in order to honour the match that was to take place between two great teams of the world.
“I am excited to be associated with the 2012 Curtis Cup match at The Nairn Golf Club and am currently working on some images,” Lucy said.
“The game deserves to be portrayed in a modern, fun and yet serious manner. The Curtis Cup will be contested by athletes at the very top of their amateur careers – I am trying to honour that in the work that I am making,” she further added.
The organisers expected the tournament to be a great boost to the local communities’ potential to host such a mega event. It was also a great step to promote the local tourism industry.
