Curtis Davies lashes out at Martin O'Neill
Aston Villa centre-back has launched a scathing attack on former Villa boss Martin O’Neill for what he describes as "stopping” his career.
The former West Brom defender has since been sent out on loan to Leicester by new Villa manager Gerard Houllier, in a bid to get his career back on track. But Davies feels it’s a move
that should have happened a long time ago.
"My career hadn't just stalled - it had stopped. People describe me as having a lack of form after an injury, but how can you lack form without playing games? I wasn't allowed to go on
loan in January, but was kept as a spare part, basically."
Davies has endured a frustrating time at Villa Park since making his big money move across the Midlands from rivals West Brom in 2008. Having suffered a lengthy spell on the sidelines
early on in his Villa career, he struggled to regain his form, and was then frozen out by O’Neill for over a year.
Davies had asked the Northern Irishman to go out on loan in order to get himself back up to speed, but O’Neill insisted he would get more playing time at Villa Park, a promise Davies insists
was broken.
"Were promises broken? Yes, but I was more angry than hurt as I knew I should have been allowed to go out on loan and play matches."
Davies is currently on a short-term move, playing for Leicester, to prove he has what it takes to succeed at Villa under the new manager.
His career has been
disappointing path
to after showing so much promise in his early playing days, with both West Brom and Luton. At 25-years-old, he still has time on his side, but he needs to turn that potential into
reality, and prove his worth at the top level.
