Curtis Granderson homers but New York Yankees lose to Baltimore Orioles 1-6 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were annihilated by the Baltimore Orioles 1-6 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Friday, August 31 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Curtis Granderson was the only batter who managed to score for the Yankees, hitting a home-run to right centre in the bottom of the ninth but Baltimore held on to their lead comfortably to win the contest.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Hiroko Kuroda tossed up eight plus innings but could not save his side from an embarrassing loss. Overall, he gave up four runs while striking-out four batters to take his 10th loss of the season. His counterpart from
Baltimore, Miguel Gonzalez, on the other hand, gave up just four hits in seven outstanding innings to grab his sixth win of the season.
"He was real fresh tonight. Obviously, he responded," Orioles’ pitching coach Rick Adair said. "I think Gonzo's a guy that really stays in the moment. He knows where he's been. ... He's a very fierce competitor. So we're glad to have him."
"I think he's a guy that's just letting it fly and trusting himself," Showalter said. "He doesn't have anything to lose. Heck, he's had a lot of people in his career tell him that he couldn't do something and I think he knows he's in a place where people
get him and know what he brings."
Yankees will be extremely disappointed with the outcome of the game. With home conditions working in their favour, they had an excellent opportunity to start the series on a winning note but that did not turn out to be the case.
Orioles were the more determined of the two teams as they outclassed the Yankees in finer details of the game. With their win, Buck Showalter and company improved their record to 73-58 and they are now just two games behind the Yankees at the top of American
League East Division standings table.
Yankees will be looking to regroup and fight back in Game 2 to keep the series alive to preserve their first place on AL East standings.
