Curtis Granderson shines as New York Yankees edge Boston Red Sox 5-4 – MLB Update
New York Yankees tied up the road series as they edged the Boston Red Sox 5-4 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, September 12 in second game of their three match series.
Yankees’ starting pitcher David Phelps had an excellent time on the mound as he allowed just five hits and a run in five plus innings to grab his fourth win of the season. Credit should be given to Phelps for putting up a solid show after taking an embarrassing
loss on his previous appearance.
Relief pitchers Clay Rapada, Cody Eppley and Joba Chamberlain displayed top quality throwing skills to help New York claim a much needed victory. Chamberlain, in particular, used his sliders and fastballs very effectively. Closer Rafael Soriano snatched
his 37th save of the year after giving just one hit in 1.1 innings.
"It's playoff baseball," Girardi said. "You're playing in the playoffs right now. That's the way it is for us."
"I said, 'We're going to sit you out,'" Girardi told reporters about Derek Jeter who picked up a serious injury. "It's not that serious. It's something we have to be aware of. But hopefully he's OK."
Curtis Granderson provided the Yankees with a dream start as he broke the deadlock with a towering home-run to right centre in the fourth inning. Robinson Cano smacked a two run home-run to left to extend New York’s lead to 3-0. Granderson hit his second
home-run in the seventh as Yankees took complete control of the situation.
"He hit the ball good. It just wound up in [Soriano's] glove," said Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine in an interview.
"It's really not a thing," Jeter told reporters, refusing to confirm any details about the injury. "They just said, 'Put ice on it [and] come back tomorrow.’"
It was an extremely important win for the Yankees who are tied with Baltimore Orioles for first place on the American League East Division standings table. Manager Joe Girardi will be expecting his men to continue the good work in the finale to build on
some much needed confidence.
