Curtis Thompson fails to defend his title at the 2012 Dixie Amateur
Curtis Thompson failed to defend his title at the 2012 Dixie Amateur, after he carded two over-par tournament score on the leaderboard.
The tournament was being stage at three different courses, including the Heron Bay, Palm-Aire Cypress and Woodlands West. Heron Bay was the only course to host more than one round, the first and the last round of the tournament.
Thompson, a Louisiana State University sophomore, marked a decent start to his campaign by carding a six-under par 66 in the opening round to take the second spot on the leaderboard.
He then failed to keep the momentum going into the second round, and faltered for a four-over par 76. Thereafter, he completely lost control over his game and recorded another poor finish on day three for a three-over par 75.
Entering the final round, he was trailing the leader and eventual winner Daniel Berger by 22 strokes. Therefore, it was impossible for him to surge to the top of the leaderboard.
The only option left to him was to play for dignity. The final round witnessed him making some improvement, as he carded an even-par 72, to finish tied for the 20th position on the leaderboard.
At the end of the day, he seemed really disappointed with his overall performance in the tournament.
According to the golf commentators, his poor performance in the second round completely shattered his confidence, which dragged him out of contention for the top spot in the competition.
Thompson, in the meantime, praised the way Berger played throughout the week. Berger did not allow anyone, at any moment, to come close to him on the leaderboard.
Entering the final round, he held a massive nine-stroke lead over his rivals and stretched that to 13 strokes, by the end of the tournament.
It was second amateur title victory of Berger’s career, which, according to his father, was the biggest win of his life. His first victory came at the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying tournament at the Weston Hills Country Club, earlier this year.
David Erdy, in the meantime, recorded the best round of the day, after he carded a three-under par 69, to finish tied for the eighth position. He was one of the four participants who managed to break the par mark on final day.
