Custom Stain Your Warwick Bass?

Question

Ok so I bought a red warwick bass guitar. I am not crazy about the color, so I want to stain it a wood color. Has anyone done anything like this with their warwick - and have any advice?

I would think youd have to remove all the varnish first as it will protect the wood from the stain and make it look c**p
