If you are a police officer in California, are you aloud to take your own personal car and make it into a police car for service?

  1. first, its allowed...not aloud...

secondly, if you are a police officer, then you would be able to make you car into a patrol vehicle...I don't know why you would want to because the car should already be provided for you...but you can't be acting as a police agent outside of your jurisdiction...that would be impersonating an officer.

If you are a civilian and turn your car into a "police cruiser" while acting as an officer (turn on your takedown lights), then you would be arrested and charged with impersonating an office...

  2. It's VERY RARE that you'd be alowed to do this. Most departments that do permit this only do it for high ranking officers (i.e. Chiefs) or officers in special units (i.e. Detectives, SWAT). Outside of special situations in some smaller departments in rural areas regular officers drive dept owned cars. You asking this question makes me wonder why you really want to be a LEO.
