Customs and border patrol?

Question

I applied for a customs agent job in California. Now, it says with a 4 year degree you make 29,700 or close at the grade level of 05. Now with atleast 1 year of graduate classes you go in at grade 07 and start at 36,800 or close to that. This just doesn't seem all that great for having that much education. You also have to do 15 week training academy. Now, with a Ba/bs you will make a little over 60,000 with the sheriffs department. What gives? Why are these government jobs so low? I'd rather do the customs agent type work but the pay is the only thing hindering me from doing so. So my question is this, What opportunities are there for advancement in customs work and in how many years? I know top deputies in the sheriffs can make over 100k after like 8-10 years. So does government work get better once your in or what?

It all depends what you want to do in the long run.  Customs is a great job; airports, landcrossings, etc.  Federal government jobs are great when it comes to the benefits (TSP, retirement, low cost health and life insurance, paid holidays, comptime and OT) to name a few.  There are other Fed LE jobs that pay really well.  Once you start in Customs or CBP what they now call it, you can move to another federal agency and your time in the government counts and all your benefits move with you.  If you go local or state there might not be so much flexibility.  Sometimes the state or locals pay more but it's what you are looking for really (inspection vs. running and gunning), (criminal investigating vs. speedtraps)  If it's the money you are looking for, look at the jurisdictions out in Long Island, New York.  If you stay with the feds there is plenty of opportunity to move up; supervisor, then manager....etc.

DANG!100k what county is this? Government Jobs do tend to get better after you get in and get experience the pay goes up within the years
