Question:

Cut from volleyball?

So recently, i was cut from the jv volleyball team. The thing is volleyball is my favorite sport and i actually thought i was good. A girl from the jv girls team saw me playing and commented on how good i was and a varsity guy also did too but this was 6 months before tryouts during "freshman" camp. At open gym i was really good but at tryouts i just broke under pressure. And the weird thing is i had trouble with bumping, which is easiest for me and i did well at serving, which i thought was my worse asset. What should i do now?

i want to make the team next year but everyone is going to get better at practice while im stuck at home not improving my skill. And next year, the tryouts are going to be even tougher because there are going to be more ppl trying out

  1. Jake,

I'm sorry about this. There is nothing more heartbreaking for a coach than to have to cut a player that wants to be there. Here's what I suggest:

Ask the JV or Varsity coach (They actually run the program) if you can be a manager. I'm a varsity coach and I like to have a manager because not only do they help me with setting up things when we host matches and tournaments, but they can also practice with the team and learn how to get better. I like to have one "fence" player, as I like to call it, a year. Understand that you will not get individual attention during practices, but you can take part in drills and such. Coaches save quality time for players that play in matches. You'll understand this WHEN you make next year's squad.

Realize that you will never play in a game, but use that time to get better and learn what the coach is looking for. Don't worry about getting teased by players. Coaches will do all they can to let players know that the manager position is to be respected.

Have a good attitude and stay focused on helping the team and you might impress the coach enough to try something like this for you this year. I hope that helps

  2. oh well, next year come to tryouts better, not be pressured or anything, just be confident and you'll be fine.

  3. do club! and do some club summer camps of privet lessons!

    good luck!

  4. When I was in HS the best way I got better was playing with guys down at the beach.  REAL players, not jungle ball 10 on 10 games.  4 man or 2 man.  2 man is best because it helps you develop all the skills....passing, setting, hitting, blocking, defense, serving.

Another option is to play with the team members in the off season.  Find out where they go and play and join them.  Most often there is a gym or outdoor court that they go to in the summer.  Show up and play.  The more you play the better you get.

Do strength and conditioning too.  Jump rope, pushups, running, situps.  If you can become a good jumper some coaches will work with you just to develop you.

  5. practice practice and more practice

    play on a culb team

    or an open team!!!

    good luck

  6. you can always practice at like an open gym with friends and stuff.

theres also boys volleyball teams, like rec or even club. i mean, there arent as many club teams as girls, but there are still quite a few out there. tryout for a rec or club team. club would be better, but if you cant find one, see if there is a rec team you can try out for.

    hope this helps! =]

  7. practice at home! go buy a volleyball from a sports store (even wal-mart has some!). they cost a little less than $15. just buy one go home and practice!

even ask the coach if you can practice with the team after school. you'll get better and ready for next year. plus your coach can correct your mistakes. even though you won't play in any games or anything you'll get some practice in! you may improve and its possible that the coach would let you on the team! =-)

if your friends like volleyball too, then get some of them together at somebody's house (whoever has the best or biggest yard) and just practice volleyball together!

you can ask somebody on the team to help you. call them up and ask them to practice with you!

(i dont know about you, but my coach would be glad to open up the gym on a weekend or anytime so we could practice. try doing that. just call her/him and ask if they could unlock the gym!=-D) GOOD LUCK!!!

  8. Im sorry happend to me last year also

    I was like wtf :/

  9. You have to decide how badly you want to make it. If I were you, I would work like crazy to try to make it, but then there is the possibility that you would fail again. Then you would have wasted a lot of time.

First decide if it is worth the work it would take.
