Hmmm...how about Shadow? Or...Onyx (black gem stone).

I have a few nicknames for a few friends of mine, but they're in a foreign language. I found a meaning to a word that reminds me of their character and used that as the nickname.

Or choose an animal that best describes him.

If he is confiding in you about his girlfriend problems, he obviously cares/trusts you enough to do so. I wouldn't do anything while he's still with her, but if he becomes single, tell him how you feel. :)

Think of something funny hes done in the past.

Like I knew a kid back in Elementary school and one time at lunch I said something funny while he was drinking something and he sprayed it everywhere. So then I named him SPRINKLER.
