Cutler not worried about Bears’ preseason struggles
The Chicago Bears offence has not looked sharp thus far in the pre-season. The Bears haven’t been able to protect Jay Cutler and their offence in general has been flat. They are adapting to new offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s system which calls for many deep passes and pass protection is essential. Cutler is not worried about it as he says the pre-season is all about correcting these mistakes.
"Is there reason for concern? Maybe, maybe not. I'm not concerned. I don't think anybody in that locker room is really concerned about where we're at. I think we're happy with where we're at. There's room to improve, absolutely, but I think we'll be ready week one," said Cutler.
Cutler was brought into Chicago to be their franchise quarterback. The Bears have had a lingering problem the past decade of not having a proper franchise quarterback and it ultimately cost them in 2006 when they fell just short of a Super Bowl title. Cutler struggled last season throwing 26 interceptions, but the Bears still signed him to a long-term deal and are banking on him to lead them to greatness.
The Bears are 0-3 in the pre-season and the offence has only scored 36 points. When you’re learning a new system though, there are speed bumps in the way and preseason can’t be taken too seriously. Teams don’t have a game plan in preseason and just run plays to see how well they work. Adjustments will be made heading into the season and the Bears will hope the offence can find their stride.
"We're doing some stuff just to get it on film, just to run plays, and get them game-ready and season ready,” said Cutler. “We're not calling exactly what we want to call against exactly the right defense. We're not checking anything or doing anything like that. We're not making a ton of adjustments on the fly, either.”
Cutler insists that the Bears’ offence will look a lot different when the regular season starts and he is right that preseason shouldn’t be used to judge a team. The problem in Chicago is that offence has been a problem for the team for a long time. Fans are eager to see an improved attack and the organization is waiting for it too. They made a huge investment in Cutler and they want to see it right now.
