  1. it is a horse that does cutting...cutting is when tou go into a group of cows and pick one cow out of the herd...driving it away from the herd..instinctively cows are herd animal so they will try to get back to the herd...thats where you come in..A good cutting horse will mirror the cows movement preventing it from getting back to the herd..it is such a rush and you as the rider sit "on your pockets" let down the reins and hold on to the horn..

  2. First off let me explaine the reason for cutting. It is not just an western event. Cutting refers to a job that is still done on large ranches today with out any judges. It is mostly used at the branding fire. When ranches bring in their calves, that need to be tagged, doctored, castrated(90% of the beef we eat is from steers), and branded. Well you can't just bring in all the calves, they have to seperated form their mothers and the herd. They have to be cut form the herd. The cowboy sifts into the herd on horseback and finds the calf and edges it out away from the herd. This is where cutting begins. The horse works back and forth keeping the calf infront of it, till the calf quits. That is when someone comes along and ropes the calf and brings it to the branding fire or the calfpen.

Over the years cowboys and ranchers would brag on who's horse was best at cutting and that is how the event began.

Now modern cutting competion has evolved. Normaly there is a group(pen) of 20-30 calfs, and every rider is given 2:30 min, to cut 3 or more calfs(sometime you can get away with 2 if it was a good run), The horse and rider are scored on willingness to work, form, activity of the calf, control over the herd and style.

There are many websites that explaine cutting in full. But in all almost all western events are still used on ranches today, teamroping, teampenning, calfroping, cutting etc.

Cutting horses are known for thier agility, speed, flexiblity and inteligence.

  3. Cutting is a western event where there is a group of cows, and the rider will be given a cow number....they have to cut that cow out from the group of other cows, and then "work" the calf.  They are scored on how well they work the cow that they are supposed to cut.  Its one rider at a time, and actually pretty neat to watch.  Youtube "world champion cutting" or something and you should be able to find a good example.  The horses that are really good at it are pretty natural, and do a lot of the work themselves.  You'll actually see the riders hold on to the horn because the horses move so quickly!

  4. Cutting, the same as a Barrel horse does barrels.

    A cutting horse does cutting!

I don't know for sure, but I am guessing that the sport of cutting came from the nassecety for a horse to have cutting skills in everyday ranch life...but I don't know that for sure!!!

  5. it's where you ride into a herd of cows and cut a specific one out (separate it from the herd) it takes good concentration and is better done with a horse that has cow sense.it's the horses job.it means that the horse is schooled or good at it.

  6. cutting is an event that people show there horses in. It is where 1 horse goes into a large group of cattle and "cuts" 1 cow out the objective is to keep the co from getting back to the heard the horse is between the cow and the rest of the herd and runs back and forth keeping the cow that it chose out of the herd from getting back with the rest of the cattle

You want to have a good seat to ride a cutter...yes riders hang onto the horn as that horse turns on a dime and will give you change in return...they're very, very quick, smart, very focused and have a world of cow sense.

  8. Their horse is trained to, with little interference from the rider, quietly walk into a herd of settled cows, rider picks his/her cow with reins held high, then as the cutting horse commits to this cow, the rider drops his rein hand below his saddle horn hand and the ride begins.  The object is to keep that cow fom the herd.  The rider has 2 1/2 minutes from the time he/she crosses the timing line about 1/3 the way to the working area to work 1-3 cows without losing a cow, quiting the cow, matching turn for turn the movements of the cow.  The rider starts with a score of 70, from this score the judge will subtract points for mistakes, and add points for good cow work, handling challenging situations, etc..
