Cutting an air vent in tile floor?

I would like to cut an air vent in a tile floor. Is there a circular saw blade to cut tile? Or do I need to pull up the tile, cut it with a tile saw, and re-lay it?

Thanks for your help

  1. use a grinder, its the fastest, cleanest (cutwise), and easiest way to cut a hole in tile and you can use it to cut through the sub-floor in one cut...

  2. Masonry blade on a skill saw or a grinder.  It'll make some noise and a lot of dust, but it will cut the tile.

  3. You need a diamond blade grinder, that will cut through the tile.  It will make an unclean cut so make sure the vent overlaps.

  4. You might try a roto-zip or dremel tool with the correct bit.

  5. You can drop down through with a wet blade on a skill saw, but I think if it was mine.......I would try and release it and take it up to a Lowe's or Home depot mark it and have them saw it.......just remember to be a 1/4'' bigger on the hole.........then I would glue it back down with construction adhesive.....much easier and holds like he**..........all the best

  6. Hi Steve,

For the smoothest cut you'd want to use a continuous rim diamond blade.  A wet 4 3/8" circular saw would be best, but if you don't have access to one I wouldn't buy one for my 7 1/4".  It's an odd size blade and not very versatile.  You could purchase one of these http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/s... along with one of these http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/s... and be out under $50 (I'm always looking for a reason to buy a new tool :) ).  Outline the area to be cut with a sharpie marker, wear safety goggles, cut with the motor to the left of the blade, as the dust is being thrown out the front have someone hold or rig up a shop vac hose at the source of the dust, and go slow.  Might be a good idea to relieve the corners with a few holes by a tile drill bit.  If the wood needs to be cut out use a jigsaw or sawzall.  Good luck!!
