Question:

Cutting down CO2 and cars?

Almost everywhere you go there is something about how to reduce your CO2 footprint. However, i can't help noticing ads for brand new cars that still run on petrol or diesel. Surely if they really wanted to slow down global warming, they shouldn't encourage people to buy cars (that, even though they are more ecofriendly than before, still give out pollution?). Is it just because of money again?

  1. What are the options? Electric cars don't have the range, so are only suitable for relatively short journies, and even hybrids aren't as eco friendly as is made out. I can't see the day in the near future when an alternative becomes available.

  2. There are alternatives to gasoline burning vehicles. Just do a Google search for the TESLA ELECTRIC CAR (if you have $100K to spend) or the POOR BOYS TESLA ELECTRIC CAR (if you have $10K to spend).

If you're an experimenter, you might want to try using HHO GAS mixed with your gasoline.

  3. Buy Flex Fuels, hybrids, and cars that run on Bio Diesel. I don't know for sure if they have Bio Diesel cars to drive yet. Good Luck

  4. Indeed 60% of car ads are for cars in the top 2 most polluting bands and just 5% are for the bottom 2 bands (source "change the world for a fiver")

Clean, cheap to run, low maintenance vehicles don't need to be advertised for demand to exceed supply http://www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com

    plus

add in the "free" advertising taking fossil head journalists on jollies, and subsequent coverage on the likes of Top Gear, who have not mentioned the Norfolk UK made electric sports car aka Tesla http://www.teslamotors.com,

and would rather crash a 230mph jet car rather than consider the 350-400mph bluebird http://www.speedace.info

It is not just about money, people generally don't want to face the concequences of limits to growth, peak oil etc.

and the media that should inform won't understand that zero emmission vehicles can be more entertaining and outperform the complicated noisy, smelly heaps foisted on us by global corps. eg http://www.killacycle.com

  5. We live in a capitalist society.  The purpose of auto companies is to sell as many cars as possible.

The good news is that hybrids are becoming more popular, and plug-in hybrids and affordable long-range high-speed electric cars are coming in the near future.

People still need to get around, but we're moving in the right direction.

  6. Certainly. Money is everything !

Making it illegal to build cars etc. with engines bigger than, say, twelve hundred cc - would help a lot.

And get these great big four-by fours off the road. The average person just does not need one !

Let these folk find a status symbol that doesn't polute the atmosphere.
