yes shortening the mustache is sunnah but lenthening beared is also a sunnah we may not shorten the beared after growing it for 40 days which is considered to be haram.

Trimming the Mustache is the Sunnah.

حف الشوارب as the prophet salallaahu alaihi wa salam said. Meaning to trim the Mustache. Some of the Ahnaaf take حف to mean حلق (shave) but that is a weak position based off of a weak Hadeeth. The correct position is to trim the Mustache.

It is a sunnah. But remember that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used the words to shorten them not to trim them all i.e. to حلق.

I think we can take it as a Sunnah although some people say that it could have been a method to distinguish the Muslims from other peoples since nobody else did like that at the time. Moreover, it is really disgusting when somebody with a mustache drinks something and the mustache sinks in the liquid. As the other guy said, it might cause you harm.
