Cutting out a large range of sound frequencies?

is it possible to create a device that cuts out large ranges of sound frequencies? for example all high sound frequencies and only passing through low and medium frequencies? If so then how? would band-pass filters work....or notch filters????

  1. Such devices are called filters and there are books written about how to design them.  Mechanical acoustic filters can be designed to cut out high or low frequencies.  If the signals are in electrical form, then there are a wide range of filters that can be designed.  There are low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-cut (notch) filters.  There are passive, active, and digital forms.  It is not clear whether you are after an acoustic or electronic filter.
