Cutting with a dremmel?

I laid a laminate floor and it buckled slightly bc its too tight against one wall. I bought a dremmel thinking i could just use it to trim the one board but when I started to cut it started smoking and smelled awful, like it was burning. 'm using the attachment that is about 1 1/2" and has writing on the one side. the manuals picture was confusing as to which was the cutting tool but i'm pretty sure i have the right one attached. is it normal for the dremmel to smell like that and smoke and spit sparks while using it? it made me really nervous.

  1. You're probably using the metal cut-off attachment, which is fine, but the high RPMs of the dremel will burn the wood so you could 1) Use the dremel on low speed if you have that ability or 2) keep a wet towel handy in case the wood starts to actually burn. The sparks are from the blade wearing away as you cut. Maybe check the hardware store for a wood-cutting blade if you're concerned.

  2. Laminate flooring is designed to be super tough and last for years. The small cutting tools designed for Dremmel are designed with small projects in mind. Your best option for cutting laminate with a Dremmel, is the Mini Cutting Saw. It looks like a miniature circular saw. It's Dremmel part # 670. It retails for about $20-$30.
